The Possums’ Case – Court Diary June 2019
Day 10: Wednesday June 19, 2019
As expected, this morning we began the final part of our hearing beginning with Mr Waller presenting a summary of VicForests’ case. Mr Delany then followed with a summary of the highlights of our case, including references to the experience, authority and reliability of our expert witnesses Dr Andrew Smith and Professor John Woinarski. Also as expected, both summaries exceeded the allotted time, running well into the afternoon.
For the last hour of the day we commenced the address of selected issues, beginning with Mr Waller talking about the potential loss of exemption under Section 38 of the EPBC Act. Ms Watson then began to present our response on the same issue but ran out of time so will finish in the morning. After this we will continue similarly taking turns to present both sides’ views on the listed issues. This will be the last day of the hearing so the presentations will have to be succinct if we are to finish in time! More detailed written closing submissions will be made at a later date.
As usual, you are welcome to join us as observers in Court tomorrow. We will be glad to see you one last time – Level 8 Court B. Proceedings begin at 10:15am; allow time to get through security, queues have been long this week. The court building is next to Flagstaff Station.
The Court is maintaining a dedicated website for the case. Significant documents will be added as the case proceeds.
